Description.

Chronos is cinematic animated short that captures how war leads to ultimate destruction and human suffering. It was created as the 1st masters project for the Realtime Arts & Visual Effects program at the University of applied sciences Salzburg.

My role in this project was to create to smoke simulations for the artillery shot.

Idea.

The core idea is to combine drum and base track with topic of deeper meaning and message. A microscopic infection grows into a city-wide plague, visualizing how extremist ideology spreads. Pressing individuals into conformity, eroding institutions, and consuming thought itself until nothing remains. We wanted to show how information, ideologic views etc. in a modern world can start of small and spread until it becomes a world wide phenomenon. Metaphorical for this we used the symbol of a fungus/infection that is spreading and selectively contaminating everything in its path.

Behind The Scenes.

Creating the artillery smoke effect required a lot of simulation tweaking and figuring out the best setup and caching methods so that the team was able to use it in Cinema4D. I started by emitting particles that would later act as the source for the volume. This enabled me to get a rough idea of the final look early and allowed for faster iterations.
